Shaping Canvas Around Whole-School Learning

For almost a decade, ASH, a school in the Hunter, has refined Canvas into a model for whole-school learning. Since adopting Canvas in 2016, the school has focused on creating a consistent, easy-to-navigate learning experience for students, families, and staff.

Before Canvas, learning looked different from one classroom to the next. Course layouts varied, assessment information was presented inconsistently, and students often spent unnecessary time finding resources or feedback.

Deputy Principal Darren describes the experience in one word: "Inconsistent."

Rather than simply implementing a learning management system (LMS), ASH used Canvas to embed its vision for teaching and learning across the school. The goal was to provide enough structure for consistency while still giving teachers the flexibility to design engaging learning experiences.

Darren describes the school's philosophy as "tight, loose, tight." Core elements such as navigation, assessment information, and support resources remain consistent across every course, while teachers retain the freedom to personalise their content and teaching approach.

One example is the school's standardised homepage, which provides students and families with familiar access to course information, assessment schedules, literacy and numeracy support, and key resources. Behind the scenes, centralised design also reduces repetitive administration by allowing updates to be made once rather than across hundreds of individual courses.

Assessment has received the same attention. Shared templates, common rubrics, and consistent visual cues help students quickly identify formal assessment tasks, while outcomes-aligned rubrics provide clearer visibility of learning progress.

The benefits extend beyond the classroom. Students always know where to find learning materials and feedback, families have continuous visibility of progress and upcoming assessments, and school leaders can see how teaching expectations are being reflected consistently across courses.

Today, Canvas is embedded in daily school life, recording more than two million page views each month across approximately 1,000 learners. According to Darren, the success comes from combining thoughtful school design with the flexibility of Canvas.

"It works, and it works for very good reasons. The reasons are the combination of our thinking and design with the product."

ASH's experience demonstrates that a learning management system can become much more than a repository for resources. With a deliberate whole-school approach, it becomes the foundation for consistent teaching practice, improved visibility, and better learning experiences for every student.
